Upcoming exhibit at Penn College showcases diversity and quality of regional art

According to a press release, the Gallery at Penn College will open an exhibition on June 7 that celebrates the artistic skill and vision of the regional art community. Held every three years, “100 Miles” showcases the diversity and quality of art created by emerging, early-career and established artists living within a 100-mile radius of Penn College.

The show will run through July 19, with a public reception set for 2 to 4:30 p.m. June 7.

The exhibition was juried by ransome, an artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses collage, painting, sculpture, installation and video. Through these forms, ransome reflects on his family’s life in America from 1899 – the year his grandmother was born – to the present day. The artist was born in North Carolina and moved to a New Jersey suburb as a teenager. He graduated from Pratt Institute, New York City, and was a tenured professor in the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University before retiring to pursue his dream of being a studio artist. He received a master’s degree in studio arts from Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Sixty artists from 35 cities were selected for inclusion in “100 Miles.” Twenty-seven of the artists participated in the 2023 juried exhibition.

“The 100 Miles exhibition serves as a mirror of the region and of this particular moment in time,” said Penny G. Lutz, gallery director. “The show brings together artists connected by location yet varied in perspective.”

Ransome said it was the diversity of voices and approaches that stood out the most to him when selecting work.

“Each submission offered a conversation about process, intention and impact, and I appreciated the challenge of weighing those conversations against one another,” he said. “I was energized by works that invited reflection, disrupted expectation and offered new ways of seeing. I look forward to seeing how these works continue to resonate with audiences.”

The Gallery at Penn College is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. It is closed on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays and July 2-5.
