For those who are fond of a relaxing afternoon, enjoying beautiful flowers and timeless melodies, the Williamsport Chamber Choir and Orchestra is offering “Voices in Bloom: A Flag Day Garden Stroll” from 2 to 5 p,m. June 14.
During the event, a small collection of historic homes in the Vallamont section of Williamsport will open their garden gates for visitors to explore the gardens and grounds. Each home will be paired with a local brewer or distillery offering a signature sip.
The experience is designed as a walking stroll through Vallamont. Homes are close in proximity, though some gardens include gentle hills, terraces and steps.
“No rushing. No schedule. Just a gentle unfolding from one garden to the next. Each garden has its own distinct atmosphere, with music, signature sips, light bites and thoughtful details waiting for you along the way. You’ll also find a few special activity options available for purchase, along with opportunities to further support the Williamsport Chamber Choir & Orchestra,” according to information from the group.
Throughout the event there will be performances by the choir’s adult and youth ensembles, sharing patriotic favorites and timeless melodies.
The four private residences for the self-guided garden stroll include: Milligan Residence, featuring Sip & Savor; Ritter Residence, featuring New Trail Brewery; Broadhurst, featuring Nomad Distillery; and the Rackish Residence, featuring Therapy Brewing.
“The afternoon has been designed to feel unhurried, beautiful, and just a little bit magical,” according to the organizers.
“The Williamsport Chamber Choir and Orchestra (WCCO) exists to enrich our community through exceptional choral music, meaningful performances, and shared cultural experience,” said Megan Havrilla, the manager for WCCO, which is celebrating its 26th year in the area.
“Our impact is that we share high-quality choral and orchestral performances in our region. We do a lot of collaboration with local arts organizations and performers, and we just try to continue to invest in the culture of vitality of Williamsport. We have a lot of our local teachers in our choir, we have a lot of music people who have music degrees in our choir, and it’s just a place for us to really dive into some more complex choral music and share it with the community,” she added.
The choir because of its size — there are about 40 voices in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections — is designated as a chamber choir.
“In the orchestra piece, we don’t have an orchestra with every concert,” Havrilla said.
“It depends on what our director has picked for the certain concert. About once a season, we have an orchestra, and we have members from the community that we have come in and play, and our orchestra consists, once again, it depends on what instruments are needed for what pieces we’re performing,” she said.
She noted that last fall they had a violinist, violist, cellist and some oboe and bass players.
“So a lot of stringed instruments are what we use. At our upcoming season. In January, we’ll have a large string orchestra accompanying us as well,” she said.
The Youth Choir, which is also featured during the event is the educational outreach of WCCO and exists to “cultivate young musicians through exceptional choral training, meaningful performances, and a strong sense of community. WYC provides students across the region with high-level musical instruction while fostering confidence, cultivating discipline, and a lasting appreciation for the arts,” according to information from WCCO.
“It’s our daughter organization, and students come and audition for it,” Havrilla explained.
“They get a little bit more specialized choral instruction through our director, and they perform at least two independent concerts a year, as well as we’ve been doing things such as ‘The Nutcracker’…they were also featured with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra this past October,” she said.
