According to a press release, the Community Theatre League will continue its 50th season this October with "Little Shop of Horrors," the beloved cult classic musical that blends dark comedy, romance, horror, and unforgettable music into one wildly entertaining theatrical experience.
Performances will be held Friday through Sunday this week and Oct. 22-25.
Following the powerful and moving regional premiere of "Come From Away," CTL continues its recent tradition of bringing audiences something a little darker during the month of October with another delightfully dark musical. This time, the danger comes with leaves, roots, and a very particular appetite.
With book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, "Little Shop of Horrors" tells the story of Seymour Krelborn, a meek floral shop employee whose discovery of a strange and unusual plant suddenly changes his life. As the plant, Audrey II, begins attracting customers and bringing Seymour the success he has always dreamed of, it also develops an appetite that becomes increasingly difficult to satisfy.
Set against the gritty backdrop of Skid Row, the musical balances outrageous comedy with a surprisingly heartfelt story about ambition, love, desperation, and the consequences of wanting more than we have.
"There's something wonderfully unpredictable about 'Little Shop of Horrors,'" said Seth Sponhouse, executive artistic director of Community Theatre League. "It's funny, it's strange, it's a little bit twisted, and underneath all of that is a story about wanting more and what we're willing to do to get it.
"It's a show that lets us have a lot of fun with the audience while still giving them plenty to think about," Sponhouse added.
"Little Shop of Horrors" continues CTL's 50th season celebration, themed "Celebrating 50 Years of Community Through Storytelling." The season brings together a diverse lineup of productions that reflect the theatre's five decades of creating opportunities for local performers, artists, technicians, volunteers and audiences.
"With its October performances, 'Little Shop of Horrors' offers audiences a chance to continue the darker side of CTL's fall programming with a show that is equal parts hilarious, strange, romantic, and delightfully macabre," said the press release.
The cast of "Little Shop of Horrors" includes Olan McGrath (Seymour Krelborn), Rubie Natal (Audrey), Donnie Mapes (Mr. Mushnik), Timothy HippensteeL (Dr. Orin Scrivello), Aubyn (Johnson, Audrey ii), Lana Perry (Crystal), Jasi Shand (Chiffon), Makayla Flournoy-Brown (Ronnette) and Malachi Watson (Wanna Be).
The show's production staff is comprised of Marie Fox (director), Olivia Ciabattari (music director) and Maia Cenimo (choreographer).
