Jersey Shore driver jailed on no bail after hitting man with SUV

Bail was denied for a Jersey Shore man charged with allegedly hitting another man intentionally with his SUV at 91 O’dell Road in Fairfield Township about 3 p.m. Monday, according to state police.

Zachary Taylor Parker, 26, of 421 Allegheny St., faces several assault-related charges for striking Perry Fredin Jr. with his 2011 Kia Sorento, police said. When he was hit, Fredin “flipped in the air,” police said. Parker was an employee at Fredin’s roofing business, but had been terminated from his job, police said.

Parker admitted that there was “a great deal of animosity between him and Fredin,” and that he, Parker, was attempting to get “his girlfriend in the vehicle when Fredin jumped in front of his vehicle,” according to an affidavit. However, Fredin had a different version altogether.

“Fredin related he was trying to stop the woman from going with Parker due to information he had that their relationship was abusive. As Fredin was in the roadway, he saw Parker turn his vehicle around and begin driving towards him. Fredin said Parker intentionally turned towards him and struck him with the SUV,” the affidavit stated.

A witness confirmed Fredin’s version, reporting that he saw “Parker drive by and then turn around, accelerating at a speed he estimated at 35 mph as he began driving towards the pedestrian. The witness related he saw Parker deliberately turn to the left to strike (the man),” the affidavit stated.

Fredin was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport and was expected to be discharged, police said.

Parker fled the scene, but he was taken into custody in Jersey Shore and arraigned about 10:45 p.m. before District Judge Jon E. Kemp on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury (hit-run), recklessly endangering, simple assault criminal mischief and harassment, careless driving and driving without license. Upon being denied bail, he was automatically committed to the Lycoming County Prison.

The mischief charge stems from Parker breaking a window to a mobile home at the scene while his girlfriend was supposedly “hiding” inside the property, police were told. Fearing the consequences of what might happen if she did not go with him, the girlfriend came out of the mobile home, police said, adding that it was at this point Fredin attempted to intercede on her behalf. After Fredin was hit, the girlfriend got in the vehicle with Parker, police said.
