The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), urges designated driving and responsible party hosting during the Super Bowl this Sunday.

As part of the biggest one-day sporting event, Pennsylvania hosts a statewide Super Bowl impaired driving initiative, to reduce DUI crashes and fatalities

Preliminary PennDOT data shows there were 322 crashes resulting in 2 fatalities in Pennsylvania during the 2021 Super Bowl. Drinking drivers were involved in 27 of last year's Super Bowl crashes resulting in 1 fatality as compared to 16 drinking driver crashes the previous year.

Alcohol is not the only drug that impairs driving; illegal, prescription and over-the-counter drugs can impair driving as well. Medications mixed with alcohol can exaggerate alcohol's effects causing even greater impairment.

PennDOT reminds motorists crashes resulting from impairment are 100 percent preventable.

Always make a plan to get home safely prior to going out. Designate a driver or arrange to take a taxi or ride sharing service.

Party hosts are encouraged to offer plenty of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, take the keys from any guest who is impaired and help them secure a safe ride home.
