After stealing an estimated $338 in clothing from Burlington Coat Factory at the Lycoming Mall on the afternoon of March 1, Amy Humphries got in her Honda Civic and backed out of her parking stall, striking another motorist who was in the parking lot's travel lane, Muncy Township police alleged in court papers.
Humphries, 39, of Berwick, exited her car, removed from the front of her vehicle a basket containing the stolen clothes and put the basket in her trunk before getting back in the vehicle and taking off, police said.
She did not get very far. She was stopped still in the parking lot by a Muncy police officer, who was responding to help Muncy Township police with the shoplifting call. Police had already been alerted by a caller that the shoplifter was involved in an accident after leaving the store and was fleeing the scene. No one was injured in the minor mishap, police said.
The other driver, who managed to get a photo of Humphries' registration, told police that Humphries, before fleeing the scene, told her that she did not want the police to be notified of the accident, according to an affidavit. Humphries already has nine shoplifting convictions, police said.
Following her arraignment before District Judge Gary Whiteman on charges of felony shoplifting, receiving stolen property and accidents involving damage to attended property (hit-run), Humphries was initially jailed, but has since been released on $10,000 bail.
