Alleged intoxicated driver Andrew Cochran Lyon, 60, of 3968 Route 44 South, Jersey Shore, was arrested and taken into custody in the 2000 block of Route 44 South about 9 p.m. on June 25 after he was found to be carrying a handgun without a permit, Tiadaghton Valley Regional police said in court papers.
An officer had been told to be on the lookout for a 1957 Chevrolet whose driver was believed to be "heavily intoxicated," according to an affidavit. The car soon passed the officer as it straddled the centerline of the two-lane road, police said. "I immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming (from the driver), the officer said in the court document.
Lyon, who had a handgun concealed in his left pants pocket, refused to perform field sobriety tests and also declined to submit a blood sample. Following his arraignment before District Judge William Solomon on charges of carrying a firearm without a permit and DUI, Lyon was initially jailed, but has since been released on $25,000 bail.
In another case, Jason Willits, 45, of 93 Edgewood Drive, Jersey Shore, had a blood-alcohol concentration level of .20 about 5 p.m. on April 4 when he was stopped for making "quick, erratic adjustments" and crossing the fog line multiple times while driving a pickup truck on Route 44 in Watson Township, according to an officer with the state Fish and Boat Commission. Charged with DUI, Willits is free on bail after waiving his preliminary hearing.
