By Philip A. Holmes 1 min read

MILLVILLE -- Thirteen volunteer fire companies from three counties battled a stubborn deep-seated fire that broke out late Thursday afternoon in a large pile of debris at the White Pines Landfill on Route 442 in Columbia County. There were no reports of injuries.

Smoke pouring from the landfill was visible at least a quarter mile away, according to one firefighter. Flames broke out about 4:30 p.m. and burned out of control for several hours.

A total of nine fire companies from Columbia and Montour counties – along with three companies from Lycoming County – worked together to put the fire out. The fire departments that responded from Lycoming County included Unityville, Lairdsville, Muncy Area and Hughesville. Firefighters remained on the scene until after 11 p.m. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
