Following a week of trauma and abuse allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend Cody Eggler, the woman arrived at the Lycoming Regional police station in Jersey Shore "distraught and crying hysterically" as she shared with an officer her ordeal, according to an affidavit.
Police allege Eggler, 26, held his girlfriend hostage in their room at 311 N. Main St. for at least five days beginning on Feb. 28, and during that time, on two occasions he grabbed her by the throat and put his hands over her mouth, making it difficult for her to breathe, according to court documents.
"On another occasion, Eggler dragged the woman across the floor by her hair," police alleged. Although his license was suspended, that did not stop Eggler from taking the woman's car without her permission, it was alleged in court papers.
"He would routinely make threats and do things on purpose to keep her in the room so she could not leave," police said the woman alleged. Once while she was asleep, Eggler took the woman's car without permission, police were told. On March 5, during an argument, Eggler slapped the woman and told her to get out, police said.
When she did try to leave, Eggler allegedly stole her wallet that was on the front seat of her car, the affidavit stated.
The woman locked herself in the car, and fearing for her life, "tried to drive away" as Eggler got on the car's hood, police said. As the woman pulled away, Eggler "either jumped or fell off the hood. The girlfriend then drove away to seek safety," police said.
Eggler was arraigned hours later before District Judge Christian Frey on charges of strangulation, terroristic threats, false imprisonment, simple assault, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and theft. Initially jailed, he has since waived his preliminary hearing and is free on $50,000 bail.
