A high-speed police pursuit involving a 2007 Saturn that began in Hughesville late Tuesday afternoon ended when the driver, Mary Stackhouse, bottomed out, driving into a small swamp along Meadowbrook Road, near the Muncy Creek-Wilf township line, according to court records. Drawing his gun as he got out of his cruiser, the Hughesville officer demanded the 49-year-old woman "exit the (swamp) and come to the front of her car," but she refused, it was alleged in an affidavit. Stackhouse, of 4185 Barto Hollow Road, Huughesville, was then taken into custody with the help of a Muncy police officer, who arrived on the scene.
The pursuit began just after 5 p.m. in the area of Cemetery and South Railroad streets after a borough officer on routine patrol ran the license plate on Stackhouse's car only to learn that it was suspended. The pursuit continued on several streets, including West Academy Street, Lycoming Street, Route 405, Boak Avenue and Woolen Mill Road, where Stackhouse drove through a field, back on Woolen Mill Road before crashing on Meadowbrook Road, the affidavit stated. During the pursuit, Stackhouse nearly struck several vehicles, including a pickup truck, police said. Although not injured in the crash, Stackhouse was taken by a police officer to UPMC Muncy to be evaluated after she began to hyperventilate. Upon being discharged, she was arraigned before District Judge William Solomon on charges of felony fleeing a police officer, driving with a suspended license, driving a vehicle with a suspended license, reckless driving and three summary violations. She was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $15,000 bail.
