Williamsport man arrested after allegedly smashing doorbell camera with hammer

By Philip A. Holmes 1 min read

Wearing all black and a mask over his face, Michael A. Demers, with a hammer in his hand, steps on to the front porch of Eric Dauber's home on Second St. on the night of Dec. 16 and rips a security camera off the siding of the home, it is alleged in a city police affidavit. "He then knocks on the door and aggressively pulls the hammer backwards as if he is ready to strike" anyone who might open the door, police said. Demers then smashes Dauber's doorbell camera with the hammer, police alleged. This was all caught on camera, police said, adding that two offices recognized Demers on the video even though he was wearing a mask. Demers, 41, fled the scene, leaving blood on the doorbell camera, police said. Officers soon found him at his apartment at 1300 W. Fourth St. and took him into custody. Police said he admitted to his involvement in the crime. Arraigned before District Judge Christian Frey on charges of simple assault, tampering with evidence (he claimed he "ditched the hammer while walking home"), criminal mischief and loitering at night, Demers was released on $10,000 bail.
