Alleged drunk driver plows into Warrensville home
On the night of April 19, after drinking a half a dozen or more beers, Roger A. Harris got behind the wheel of his 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer and first struck the back of a stopped vehicle at Routes 973 and 87 in Upper Fairfield Township and then traveled west on Route 973 to Warrensville Road, where he plowed into a home, causing in excess of $20,000 damage to the property, state police alleged in an affidavit.
When a trooper arrived at the crash scene about 9 p.m., the SUV “was lodged in the home at 5865 Warrensville Road,” it was stated in the court document.
Standing next to the vehicle with his hand extended, Harris, 69, of 23 W. Bellview St., Cogan Station, shook the trooper’s hand, telling him “Thank you. Thank you for your service,” police said.
The trooper instantly detected a heavy alcoholic odor coming from Harris’ breath, police said. When asked how much he had had to drink, Harris admitted to the trooper that he drank “probably six to eight” beers that night, police alleged in the affidavit.
Due to his “unsteady balance,” Harris was assisted to an ambulance stretcher by three or four emergency responders, police said. He was taken to UPMC Williamsport, where he was treated for his injuries. His BAC at the time of the crash was .26, police said.
Total damage to the home he struck was estimated at $24,722, police added. One person was in the house at the time, but she was not hurt, police said.
Arraigned before District Judge Gary Whiteman on charges of felony criminal mischief, DUI, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle (hit-run) and four summary violations, Harris was released on $10,000 bail.
He will have a preliminary hearing later this month.
