Fire destroys cabin in Sullivan County

Photo provided

A fire that leveled a three-story summer cabin on Loper Lane in Sullivan County’s Cherry Township on Sept. 1 has been ruled accidental, according to Dushore Fire Chief John Yonkin. This photo shows what volunteer firefighters faced when they arrived on the scene that afternoon. There were no reports of injuries. While the bulk of the fire was knocked down in a matter of minutes, firefighters from Dushore and seven surrounding communities worked for three hours dousing hot spots and doing extensive overhaul to make sure the fire was out. An unattended smoldering fire in a fire pit of the deck sparked the blaze, which was discovered by a neighbor, Yonkin said. Damage was estimated to be at least $100,000, he added. The property is owned by a Philadelphia couple, he added.
