Williamsport man accused of stealing e-bike

David Smith, 62, of 334 Walnut St., has been charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property after an e-bike stolen from Dick’s Sporting Goods in Muncy Township on June 25, 2025, was located secured to the fire escape of a local club just days later, an affidavit said.

After receiving a report of its location, Muncy police confirmed it was the stolen bike based on a barcode sticker affixed to its frame.

Shortly after, city police observed an individual in the area seemingly upset about something. Approached by police, the individual identified himself as Smith and said that someone had stolen his e-bike, court documents said.

Familiar with photographs of the suspect in the Dick’s theft, officers observed that Smith and the suspect bear a strong similarity, and inquired as to where he had obtained the bike from. Smith allegedly stated that he had purchased it from “somewhere on Facebook.”

Police later spoke with a River Valley Transit operations supervisor who related that on July 28, he had allegedly witnessed an individual consistent with the description of Smith and the Dick’s theft lock an e-bike to the bike rack at the Trade and Transit Center.

The supervisor then provided two bus videos from July 25, 2025.

In the first video, from around 6:36 p.m., Smith is allegedly seen exiting the bus in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods. The second video, which was time dated around 8:48 p.m., allegedly sees Smith walk an e-bike to the front bike rack before the driver informs him she cannot transport the bike, an affidavit said.

Smith then allegedly passes by the open passenger door of the bus, at which point, the camera catches the word “Nishiki” on the side of the bike, matching the description of the e-bike stolen from Dick’s.

Comparing body camera footage from Smith’s encounter with police, as well as his driver’s license photograph, police positively identified Smith as the alleged bike thief.

Smith was arraigned by District Judge Kirsten Gardner and released on $15,000 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
