PROVIDED by Muncy Valley Fire Department A late-afternoon fire Wednesday destroyed this garage on Benders Road in Muncy Valley. The cause of the blaze remained under investigation. There were no injuries.
MUNCY VALLEY – A fire destroyed a two-car garage at 96 Benders Road late Wednesday afternoon, resulting in an estimated $60,000 loss, according to fire officials.
The two-story building was engulfed in flames when volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene about 4:40 p.m., according to Muncy Valley Fire Chief Kody Wells.
“We could see the fire as soon as we left the firehouse,” he said. The station is on Route 42, just off of Route 220.
Firefighters were successful in stopping the flames from spreading to the home, about 20 to 30 feet away, Wells said.
There were no reports of injuries, and the blaze was declared under control by 5 p.m., he said.
There were no vehicles in the building, just tools, welding equipment and a lawn mower that were all a total loss, Wells said.
Several tankers were used at the scene. Firefighters drafted water from a creek behind the firehouse.
Renters lived in the home and used the garage. Their identities were not released at this time as the investigation into the cause of the fire remained under investigation. A state police fire marshal has been consulted. The renters and the property owner have fire insurance, Wells said.
In addition to Muncy Valley, volunteers responded from Picture Rocks, Eagles Mere, Mildred Laporte and Dushore.
The road was very icy and conditions were made worse by water runoff from hoses and fire trucks, Wells said. A Davidson Township maintenance worker soon arrived with a truck full of cinders which were used,to help melt some of the ice.
