The driver of a Toyota Camry escaped injury when the vehicle was struck by a Norfolk locomotive in the 90 block of South Maynard Street at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night.

The driver was traveling south along Maynard Street when his vehicle stalled as he crossed the train tracks and got stuck in between the grates, according to South Williamsport Fire Department Deputy Chief Aaron Mclaughlin.

The driver exited the vehicle before the train made impact.

“This young man was tired and doing a favor for a friend by picking them up and was not from the area nor had been to this specific place before,” a post to the fire department’s website said.

“GPS said turn right and he thought he was turning on an alleyway when it was the tracks,” the post continued.

“The car got stuck and then stalled. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to call friends for help thinking he had time and unfortunately the train came,” the post concluded.

Traffic across South Maynard Street was shut down in both directions for about two hours as the train continued to block the roadway.

In addition to South Williamsport, city fire and police personnel responded to the incident.
