Williamsport firefighters battle porch fire in Historic District

The 900 block of West Fourth Street was closed to traffic on Monday afternoon for about 40 minutes while firefighters conducted their investigation into a rear porch fire. PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette
Williamsport firefighters rushed to 942-944 West Fourth St., located in the city’s Historical District, to douse a fire that erupted on the back porch of the 944 side about 2:50 p.m. Monday.
The duplex was safely evacuated, and firefighters had the fire out in a matter of minutes.
All occupants of building had safely evacuated the structure.
Fire damage was confined to the porch, but exhaust fans were used to clear smoke from the building. All occupants eventually were allowed back in their apartments.
Traffic was detoured away from the scene for about 40 minutes.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
