Former Williamsport school bus driver charged with stalking, unlawful contact with minors, related crimes
Identified in court papers as “a sexual predator,” one-time Williamsport Area School District bus driver Ryan Joseph Haywood was taken into custody Monday and charged with another set of crimes after new evidence came to light, according to Lycoming Regional police Detective Jordan Mahosky.
Already out on bail for allegedly having inappropriate contact with a minor on a bus back on Oct. 20, Haywood is now accused of having “contact with minors for the purpose of sexual exploitation,” Mahosky alleged in a criminal complaint.
Employed by a company that transports students for the school district, Haywood, of 2500 Federal Ave., apartment 265, was terminated last year from his position soon after police began their investigation.
After obtaining a search warrant for Haywood’s cellphone in November, investigators found in excess of 1,000 images “of young juvenile boys partially clothed,” and “many of them were screenshots from social media pages,” the investigator said.
Also on the cellphone were “more than 70 images of students,” pictures taken while they were riding on Haywood’s bus, Mohosky said, adding that except for two of the students, it appeared that all the other students were unaware that Haywood, 30, was taking their photos.
Many of the students’ photos were “from the waist down while they were turned” away from Haywood, Mahosky said.
Two of the images on Haywood’s phone showed images of older men having sexual relations with younger men, the detective said.
Using A1 to create fictional images, Haywood had on the phone nearly a dozen pictures of him “kissing young boys,” two of whom were area students, the detective said.
Mahosky said initially there was evidence that Haywood had deleted “just about everything off his phone,” but investigators found “a cache” of photos on the phone after getting a second search warrant and expanding their date range.
Haywood has now been charged with two counts of unlawful contact with minors and one count each of stalking, endangering the welfare of children, illegal use of a cellphone, corrupting the morals of a minor, tampering with evidence, obstructing the administration of law and disorderly conduct. “Haywood used his phone to create fake images of him engaging in indecent contact with children,” Mahosky alleged in court papers.
Arraigned before District Judge William Solomon, Haywood was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
