Linden area man charged with two misdemeanors
When the handgun was fired, the bullet shattered the back window to Kenneth McDermott's pickup truck, left a hole in the back of the driver's side headrest and then lodged in the dashboard on the driver's side, according to state police.
The gun was fired allegedly by Jeremy Brett Soper, who said he was target shooting in the backyard of his Woodward Township home at 6671 Route 220 on July 12, 2025. McDermott's truck was parked at a campsite on Water Street. McDermott told troopers there are often children and numerous people where his truck was parked, and if he was in the vehicle at the time, the bullet "would have hit him. Soper's home "sits above the campground," police said in an affidavit.
An estimated $2,000 damage was done to the victim's truck. Soper, 50, told police he "did not want anyone to get hurt and would do what was needed to take care of things," the court document stated. Soper has been charged with recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors, and has been sent a summons to appear for a preliminary hearing next week before District Judge Denise Dieter. The charges were filed last month.
