More than 90,000 gallons of water were needed Monday night to put out a stubborn fire inside what was originally a 50-foot high mulch pile at Sylvania Materials Excavating, 3728 Lycoming Creek Road, in Lycoming Township, according to Hepburn Township Fire Chief Nathan Confer. A company employee, using an excavator, was instrumental in breaking apart the pile so firefighters could reach all the hot spots. There were no reports of injuries. Besides Hepburn Township, other fire companies that fought the more than three-hour fire were Old Lycoming, Trout Run, Ralston, Loyalsock, South Williamsport, Nisbet and DuBoistown. The cause of the fire was undetermined, Confer said.
