Frightened child jumps from moving car as couple argues

On Sept. 5, motorist Maurice Jules Thomas was driving so recklessly as he and his wife argued in the car that one of two juveniles riding in the vehicle jumped out as the vehicle was slowing down on the Maynard Street on-ramp to Interstate 180 West, city police alleged. Before entering the ramp, the 37-year-old Thomas ran through red lights and cut off vehicles, nearly causing accidents, police were told. As Thomas was about to get on the interstate, his wife "pressed the electric park button that slowed the vehicle down," it was stated in an affidavit. After the one frightened child jumped out, Thomas stopped the car, which allowed his wife and the other child to safely get out, police said, adding that Thomas then drove off, abandoning the others, the court document stated. Thomas, of 321 Locust St., was arraigned early Saturday morning before District Judge Kirsten Gardner on three counts each of felony endangering the welfare of a child, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and one count of reckless driving. He was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

The ex-girlfriend held on for about a block before she fell off, resulting in injuries to her legs and hands, police said. While target shooting outside his Armstrong Township home on the afternoon of Oct. 8, Chas Tompkins 45, of 197 Chadless Drive, South Williamsport, fired an estimated 150 rounds from two handguns which "placed the public in danger," state police alleged in an affidavit. Tompkins told the troopers that he thought "it to be safe due to a backdrop he had constructed" outside his home. However, when the troopers inspected the backdrop, they discovered that bullets had passed through it as well as beyond it, and that from the downward angle Tompkins was firing, it was very possible for the bullets to travel into the path of motorists on Old Montgomery Pike Road, police alleged.
