Fuel tanker flips in Montoursville crash

1 min read

Both lanes of Route 87 from Montoursville north were shut down for an extended period of time Wednesday after a fuel tanker carrying 1,000 gallons of heating oil and a Subaru Crosstrek collided just north of the borough about 11:40 a.m., according to state police.

The woman driving the Subaru was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport to get treated for her injuries while the truck driver was not hurt, police said. State troopers arriving on the scene assisted both drivers out of their vehicles.

The tanker was heading north and crossed into the southbound lane, colliding nearly head-on with the Subaru, police said. Following the impact, the tanker turned 180 degrees and flipped on its passenger side with the vehicle facing south, police said.

About 50 gallons of heating oil spilled out of the vent valve at the top of the tanker, Montoursville Fire Chief Jeff Hutchins said.

Bressler's Towing responded with several employees to clean up the spill and remove the vehicles.

Employees from the state Department of Transportation also were on scene.
