New business spotlight on The Buttery Biscuit

Matt Cowden thought South Williamsport needed a restaurant where people could enjoy breakfasts and brunches.

Late last year, he opened The Buttery Biscuit at 715 W. Southern Ave. in the borough.

Located at the former site of the Humdinger restaurant, the menu includes full breakfast meals as well as sandwiches and wraps, burgers, salads and soups.

From the time it opened the day after Christmas, the restaurant has seen a steady stream of customers, according to manager Cara Rogers.

“South Side needed something like this,” she said.

The restaurant can seat up to 70 people in the front and an additional 40 people in its banquet room.

Cowden, who owns several businesses, said he didn’t really plan on opening a restaurant.

But after the Humdinger closed, he stopped by the site with the intent of buying a piece of equipment from the former eatery.

“I ended up buying a building instead of a meat slicer,” he said with a laugh.

He noted that the Buttery Biscuit is not just another food franchise, but a place where customers can enjoy homemade food.

“We get our burgers fresh ground from Tony’s Delicatessen. We try to stay local as much as we can.”

Cowden said he’s considering possibly serving dinners.

By the summer, he hopes to be offering ice cream to be sold from a walk-up window.

“We get great support from the community,” Cowden said.

Restaurant hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The phone number is 570-601-4558.

Starting at $2.99/week.
