Miles Welby a Candle Company opens downtown

You “might as well” stop on by downtown Williamsport if you are in the market for unique candles.

Miles Welby a Candle Company, owned by South Williamsport graduate Tyler Spooner, sells 100% soy, non-toxic candles.

“We try to be as natural as possible,” Spooner said.

The idea came in 2014 when a friend suggested making and selling soap. Spooner was more interested in candles, however, and the rest was history.

The name “Miles Welby” is actually a play-on-words for “might as well be.”

Spooner said that one of his high school friends used to come up with name puns, and Miles Welby “stuck with me.”

Something that sets Miles Welby apart is that the name “immediately evokes an action,” Spooner said.

The candles’ names are not the typical scent descriptions; you “(might as well be) taking a nap,” “raking leaves” or “eating fruit rings.”

Miles Welby opened a storefront in April. A large window means that patrons can quite literally look into Moon & Raven as they browse. Spooner said that his neighbors have been nothing but supportive, even recommending customers to stop by Miles Welby as they wait for a table.

“I got super lucky with the space,” Spooner said.

The central location of the storefront “allowed a lot of foot traffic.”

“It was kind of the best-case scenario.”

Though Spooner hails from the area, he spent some time away from Lycoming County. He eventually worked his way back here, a pattern he noticed in a lot of people from here, even in his employees.

“Williamsport has the potential to be a really cool downtown,” Spooner said.

Luck has also been on Spooner’s side when it comes to business growth.

“We’ve been growing at a perfect pace… I’m grateful for that,” Spooner said.

Spooner is currently in the market for a larger manufacturing space. All the candles are made on-site in the store, but increased demand has made production difficult in the small space. Spooner plans on keeping the storefront as is.

“We’re trying to expand our online business,” Spooner said.

They would like to eventually start shipping across the country and will use social media to grow their presence. The company hopes to expand in the fall, during its “busy season.”

Candles can be purchased either through mileswelby.com or by visiting 151 W. Fourth St., Thursday through Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
