A student from Hughesville Junior/Senior High School won a top prize at the 2023 National Leadership Conference of Future Business Leaders of America Inc., the nation's largest career and technical student organization focused solely on business, according to a news release.
Through a series of preliminary and final rounds at both the state and national levels, seventh-grader Dominic Dimoff, competed in the Middle School event, Multimedia and Website Design, and ended up winning 2nd place in the nation at the 2023 FBLA NLC. Using his skillful digital and oral presentations Dominic, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Dimoff, managed to come out ahead over the most impressive multimedia and website designs put forth by students in grades 6-9 across the nation.
Dominic initially wanted to expand on a project he had started the previous year in elementary school and created an ELSD Connect website to engage students with various classroom resources used by the teachers and students in the junior high classrooms. He created links to pages of the various core subjects as well as elective courses available to the seventh and eighth graders in the building. Each web page on the site is introduced with the course description and then followed with interactive links to digital applications, websites, and resources used by that particular class. The webpages also boast relevant subject area graphics and information as well as contact information for each of the teachers.
Students and teachers can easily access the website on their Chromebooks, but in order to make the website accessible to not only the one-to-one Chromebooks, Dominic created QR code flyers to post in each classroom. Students around the building easily will be able to scan the QR codes from a mobile device and be linked directly with all of the resources. Dominic also took into account that resources, links, applications, etc. change frequently, so he created Google form links for teachers and students to be able to submit issues that may need to be addressed or changed.
Dominic's advisers, Donna Gavitt and Dana Williams, are very proud of his work and dedication as a new member. The school's middle school chapter was just recently activated this past year, so all seventh, eighth, and ninth graders at Hughesville were competing for the first time.
"I am just in awe at what Dominic has accomplished at such a young age and can attribute this success to the dedication, passion, and hard work put forth from our first-year member" said Williams, according to the news release. "We also would like to thank his parents for their support throughout this lengthy, multistage process, which students begin at the start of each school year. Competing against some of the largest and most innovative schools in the nation definitely can be overwhelming, but Dominic rose to the occasion and has made our little community Spartan Proud!"
