Sixteen-year-old Kaydins Osman, of Hughesville, has a busy schedule of a typical high school sophomore. Playing on the volleyball team, cheerleading, community service club, spirit club, homework and learning to drive. Along with all these responsibilities, Kaydins is taking on a new role this year, running her own ice cream business.
Kaydins Kones, formerly Cody Creamery, 2579 Route 220, Muncy, opens today.
Kaydins is no stranger to the ice cream business, having worked at the stand last year.
When she and her parents, Sherry and Bryson Osman, got word that the Reed family would not be re-opening the popular spot this year, they stepped in to keep it open.
"We were really sad that the Reed family weren't going to continue next year and we knew it was a good opportunity for a lot of people that are younger that don't have jobs," shared Kaydins.
She enjoyed her time working at the stand last year and knew she wanted to continue her time serving ice cream.
"It's a fun job, I really like it," said Kaydins.
Taking on a larger responsibility of running the business will leave her with less free time she does acknowledge.
"I like to do my homework if I have free time in class to get ahead, and keep ahead so I don't get behind," said Kaydins.
Part of that larger responsibility means, cleaning, hiring, scheduling employees, ordering ice cream and bookkeeping, to name a few.
She designed the logo on the front of the building as well.
Her fellow students at Hughesville High School are supportive of her new endeavor.
"A lot of them were surprised, a lot of them asked for jobs," said Kaydins.
" They are really excited about it, I think they think they are going to get free ice cream," Kaydins shared with a laugh.
Kaydins' teachers were encouraging as well.
Her video production teacher, John Martin, urged her to make a video advertisement for the high school news.
Last year Kaydins was able to save enough money from her job scooping ice cream to buy her very first car. This year as the owner brings the opportunity to earn more money, for which Kaydins says she doesn't have a specific goal, aside from gas money, as well as saving for college, her mother Sherry added.
Her parents are very supportive of her new role, said Kaydins.
"They did some of the work behind the scenes, " Kaydins added.
Things such as applying for licenses, which has to be done by an adult, said Sherry.
The Reed family have been instrumental in advice and information for the Osman family.
The over 30 ice cream flavors they serve are from a local dairy farm, Blue Ribbon in Pittston.
New additions include a monthly ice cream float special as well as Italian Ice throughout the summer.
The business is open 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. weekends.
Summertime will include extended weekday hours.
What advice would Kaydin give a young entrepreneur wanting to start their own business?
"Get a family that supports you," said Kaydins.
What is the best part of her job?
"You get to see people get their ice cream and be happy. Ice cream makes people happy," Kaydins said with a smile.
