Montoursville boiler repair company owner reaches 50-year milestone

Bruce Miller, of Muncy, celebrated 50 years with his company L&L Boiler, 116 S. Washington St. in Montoursville, this month. He worked his way up from the bottom to become the owner and president. A position he has held since 1984.

L&L Boiler installs and repairs boilers, pipes and anything else in the boiler room. They also have an expansive inventory of parts. It serves the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and six surrounding states.

The Sunbury native started his career at the former Williamsport Area Community College. His first boss at L&L Boiler came to the college searching for upcoming graduates looking for work. He joined the company in 1975 as a draftsman. He was responsible for the layout and piping in boiler rooms.

“Each day, the job is never the same,” Miller said. Every project includes new situations and problems that need solved.

Throughout the years, he learned the ins and outs of boiler installation, repairs and disassembly.

He still emphasizes not cutting corners and doing each task by the book. Working with steam is dangerous. To prevent accidents and mishaps, there is no room for shortcuts.

“I only planned to get some experience for a few years and go find another job,” he said.

Contrary to his plans, he quickly moved up the company ladder. He was promoted to vice president in 1979, and then purchased it five years later.

As the new owner, Miller added an additional component to L&L Boiler. He built an inventory of over $1 million of boiler parts. This new facet exponentially increased company revenue.

“Customers come to us looking for parts,” he said. “If we don’t have it, nobody does.”

He keeps his inventory stocked with ,thing a repairman is going to need to fix a problem in the boiler room. He explained, everything eventually fails. He wants his company to be the one stop shop for this field.

He works together with competitors to provide them with the necessary parts, and also ships them across the country.

“I get my thrill knowing this company keeps growing,” he said.

Creating a profitable, trusted business takes much more than an innovative president leading the organization. Miller highlighted his employees as a key factor in the success. His staff are the ones meeting customers and fixing their issues.

“They are the ones that build this company up with experience and everything we do,” he said.

Even though he does not go into the field often, he still helps his team remotely. If they run into a problem, they send a picture or video to get his insight via cell phone. If necessary, he will trek out to the job site to help in-person.

Miller is not ready to retire yet. When he does, he hopes to spend more time with his family, shoot trap and take his 1964 Ford Mustang to car shows. In 2024, he won 10 awards for it.
