Lycoming College course offered at Montoursville Area High School
Lycoming College in partnership with Montoursville Area High School (MAHS) will offer a college-level course for students interested in exploring careers in education.
“So, You Want To Be a Teacher” is an Early Warrior Dual Enrollment course that offers a unique blend of learning and practical application for a stimulating and extensive orientation to the teaching profession.
Led by Andrea Tira, Spanish teacher at MAHS, current 10th-grade and 11th-grade students are eligible to enroll in the Fall 2025 course.
The two-credit class will be based at MAHS, but students will gain valuable observation hours at Lyter Elementary and McCall Middle School, and even have the chance to teach lessons in real classrooms within the Montoursville Area School District.
This immersive experience will enable students to explore a rewarding career that promises plentiful job opportunities, while earning credits that count toward a College degree.
“We are thrilled to announce this new program at MAHS for students interested in exploring a career in education,” said Daniel D. Taormina, superintendent of Montoursville Area School District. “For students who are considering teaching or who enjoy working with children, this is the perfect opportunity for you. We believe this program will be a truly fulfilling and valuable experience.”
“The purpose of this class is to get students engaged in the idea of becoming a teacher, and to give them a head start on their coursework,” said Rachel Hickoff-Cresko, Ed.D., associate professor of education at Lycoming College and chair of the department.
“I look forward to collaborating with Andrea Tira to design this unique new offering,” she said.
The course, which will welcome multiple guest speakers from MAHS and beyond, culminates in a capstone project where students will teach lessons to elementary and middle school students.
The cost of the course is $500 ($250 per credit hour). The College is offering an EITC scholarship to every dual enrolled student for each course taken, bringing the student’s cost down to $200 ($100 per credit hour).
MAHS students interested in enrolling for the course should speak with their guidance counselor.
