Jersey Shore names senior students of the month of May

Briar Lee Cohick, daughter of Brooke Cohick and Rex Cohick of Pine Creek, has been selected as the May Lions Club Student of the Month at Jersey Shore Area Senior High School. Briar is recognized for her exceptional musical talent, academic achievement, and leadership.
Throughout high school, Briar has been deeply involved in the school’s music program. She has participated in Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Modern Band, and Indoor Color Guard, as well as the School Musical, being a featured soloist in her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons of Jazz Band as well as her junior and senior seasons of Indoor Color Guard. She also served as Vice President of Mock Trial in tenth grade, Secretary of Marching Band in eleventh grade, Social Media Manager of Band in eleventh and twelfth grade, Woodwind Tech of Marching Band in eleventh and twelfth grade, Secretary and PR Chair of Modern Band in twelfth grade, and Vice President of Marching Band in twelfth grade. Academically, she is a member of the English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Treasurer of Mu Alpha Theta.
Briar’s accomplishments in music are outstanding. She has received the Performer of the Week award, Outstanding Soloist recognition, and the prestigious Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. She earned three Best Witness Awards and one Best Advocate Award in Mock Trial. She placed First Chair in PMEA District 8 Band and Second Chair in PMEA Region 4 Band on tenor saxophone in 2025, participated in PMEA District 8 Jazz on tenor saxophone in 2024, and placed First Chair on piano in PMEA District 8 Jazz in both 2025 and 2026. She had also earned the Thomas H. Shellenberger Jazz Scholarship in 2026. She has also performed in County Band for four years, placed First Chair in the Susquehanna University Honors Band in both 2025 and 2026, and received a talent-based scholarship to the Summer Wind Ensemble Institute.
Briar’s academic record is just as impressive. She has earned both the Schoolwide and Rural and Small Town Recognition Awards for her PSAT performance. She also has made the Distinguished Honor Roll every year of high school, has been ranked first in the Class of 2026 since eighth grade for her GPA, and was previously recognized as December’s Student of the Month during her freshman year.
Outside of school, Briar studies modern and ballet dance at Saint John’s School of the Arts and enjoys practicing her instruments and learning new ones, especially during festival season.

After graduation, Briar plans to attend Penn State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.
Sydney Jean Brungard, daughter of Jamie and Justin Brungard of Limestone, has been selected as the May Business and Professional Women Student of the Month.
Sydney has been highly involved in academics, athletics, and leadership. Throughout high school, she has participated in Drama Club, the School Musical, Track and Field, Soccer, Softball, Orange and Black Yearbook, Key Club, FBLA, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, Pep Club, Red Cross Club, and Prom Committee.
She has demonstrated strong leadership, serving as Mu Alpha Theta President-elect in 11th grade and President in 12th grade. She also served as Head Chair of Prom Committee in 11th grade and Social Media Manager for FBLA during her senior year.
Sydney has earned Distinguished Honor Roll every year of high school. She worked at the Nippenose Tavern during her junior year and is currently employed at Weis Markets. She has also volunteered at church picnics.
In her free time, Sydney enjoys singing, dancing, fishing, photography, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family. She plans to attend college to major in Communications and is currently deciding on a school.
