Lycoming College today introduced a new academic program in biomedical sciences, a rigorous, interdisciplinary major designed for students with their sights set on careers in medicine, healthcare, and biomedical research.
The program is available beginning fall 2026 and offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree pathways, giving students the flexibility to tailor their coursework to specific career goals.
Drawing from biology, chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics, physics, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and philosophy, biomedical sciences at Lycoming provides the broad scientific and humanistic foundation that today’s healthcare professionals need.
The B.S. pathway is specifically structured to satisfy the prerequisite demands of medical school and other science-intensive professional programs, while the B.A. option opens pathways into careers such as medical writing, healthcare administration, and science communication.
Students in the program will have access to a rich array of experiential opportunities such as undergraduate research, clinical internships, laboratory work, or healthcare shadowing, ensuring that every graduate enters the next stage of their career with hands-on preparation. Students can also participate in the Lyco White Coat program, Lycoming’s premier advising and mentoring initiative for students pursuing M.D., D.O., or P.A. degrees, and collaborate with faculty on active research projects in human health, genetics, microbiology, neuroscience, physiology, and molecular biology.
The program also positions students to compete for nationally recognized opportunities such as NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and NIH Summer Internship Programs (SIP).
“Biomedical sciences at Lycoming is built around a simple conviction: that the best preparation for a career in medicine or healthcare is one that combines scientific rigor with a deep understanding of the human experience,” said David Andrew, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology and director of the biomedical sciences program. “Our students won’t just be prepared for the MCAT, they’ll be prepared for the patients, the problems, and the profound responsibilities that come with working in healthcare.”
A distinctive advantage of Lycoming’s program is the College’s location within a robust regional healthcare community anchored by UPMC and Geisinger Medical Center.
In addition, Lycoming’s Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) further supports students with specialized advising, mentorship, and application assistance for every type of healthcare career, while formal affiliations with medical, osteopathic, nursing, and allied health programs create recognized pathways into some of the region’s most respected professional schools.
