Two Democrats are squaring off for one nomination in Jersey Shore Borough's 3rd Ward in the May 18 primary.
John Shireman, a retired Vietnam War veteran of 220 Mount Pleasant Ave., Jersey Shore, and Kimberly Scott of 118 Howard St., Jersey Shore, are vying for the Democratic nomination.
Shireman was a plumber for 10 years, through which he said connected with many members of the community.
He served on the Jersey Shore School Board from 2007 to 2013, and feels he has a good pulse on the needs of the community to go along with his experience in government.
"I'm not afraid to make tough decisions," Shireman said. "The population has declined and a lot of the expenses are going back on the homeowners."
As a retiree, he said he has time to give the position his full attention.
"Some people have been there a long time, and they've done a good job, but maybe it's time for some change," Shireman said. "There needs to be some new blood on borough council."
Scott did not return respond to requests for comment by deadline.
The ballot also lists one Republican candidate -- the incumbent -- for that seat.
Kenneth Scheesley of 230 High St., Jersey Shore, an Army veteran who retired from the West Pharmaceutical Co., is in his third term on council.
Scheesley said his more than a decade of service to the community on the borough council qualifies him for the role. He was borough council vice president for 12 years, has been on most of the committees in the borough, and also serves on the borough's police commission.
"I've done just about everything there is to do," Scheesley said.
Scheesley said there is unfinished business to handle.
