UPMC to host autism awareness family fun event in Williamsport

April is National Autism Awareness Month and UPMC is looking to start a conversation for community awareness and support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families by hosting a family fun night on Wednesday, April 27, located near the UPMC Williamsport campus at 609 Rural Ave., Williamsport.

Representatives from UPMC’s community wellness team, outpatient Behavioral Health services, and Emergency Medical Services are partnering with representatives from BLaST IU, Diversified Treatment Alternative Center (DTAC), HOPE Enterprises, Redka Behavioral Services, and River Valley Transit to provide education, giveaways, and food, plus information on additional resources available in the region.

“Autism generally affects social interaction, communication, language, and other common behaviors,” said Jackie Baker, clinical social worker, UPMC Williamsport. “This event is designed as an outlet specifically for our community members who are living on the autism spectrum and their supporters. Our goal is to increase awareness and knowledge of available resources here in Williamsport and the region and share the extensive support available in the community.”

For information about the event, contact Stan Cary, community outreach specialist, UPMC in North Central Pa., at 484-432-5516 or carys@upmc.edu.
