This month is Autism Awareness Month and a special event is scheduled to help enrich the lives of children and adults living with autism.
"A Night Under the Sea" is open to the public on Saturday, April 23, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Williamsport Country Club. A silent auction and basket raffle will be held along with hors d'oeuvres, music and cash bar.
Proceeds will benefit adults with disAbilities, and go towards "The Wellness Group," a newly formed program held in Lycoming County. It teaches individuals how to increase independence and navigate a healthier lifestyle within their home and community. It is important to note that at the age of 21, people with special needs are no longer eligible to receive services, such as speech, physical and occupational therapies. Often these expenses are paid "out of pocket" by the families.
Through the paintings and artwork of Austin O'Relli, a gifted artist with autism, The Wildlife of Autism Foundation will be co-sponsoring the event. Austin will introduce his latest painting, "The Egret," which will be part of the charity auction. Austin enjoys showing the world that autism doesn't define an individual, and he has used his gift of painting to inspire others.
Funds, school supplies, and special equipment are other resources needed to help make a difference in the lives of children, adults and their families who live with autism.
Last December, The Autism Society of America revealed an increase of prevalence rates, from one in 54 to one in 44. Over 7 million people in the United States are now on the Autism spectrum.
There is an urgent need for additional support, better services and equitable access to members of the Autism community in Lycoming County. Approximately one third of Autistic children have an intellectual disability according to the CDC. Due to higher numbers, local schools have been advocating for more support and staff in order to provide a deserving, quality education.
Tickets plus donations are available for "A Night Under the Sea" through the wildlifeofautism1.eventbrite.com, or contact Jane O'Relli at 570-971-7211 or janeorelli4@gmail.com.
