LEWISBURG -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States, but many of these deaths can be prevented, according to a press release from Evangelical Community Hospital.
Parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of serious injuries and deaths by up to 80% by making sure children are properly buckled in the correct car seat or booster seat, the release said.
On Friday, May 3, Evangelical Community Health and Wellness will hold a free child safety seat event at Plaza 15, Lewisburg, in the Big Lots parking lot, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
"Four out of five child safety seats are installed incorrectly -- attending this event will help make sure yours is not one of them," the release said.
During this drive-in-style event, certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to instruct parents on how to properly install their child safety seat and demonstrate how to safely secure their child in the seat using proper harness position and tightness, according to the release.
For the best results, participants are asked to bring their vehicle, owner's manual and the instruction manual for the safety seat they are using. No appointment is required.
While it is best to have the child present to assure proper fit and harnessing, the car seat can be checked for proper installation without the child present, according to the press release.
