‘Togetherness and catharsis’: UPMC Family Hospice celebrates third annual butterfly release

1 min read

UPMC Family Hospice staff and program volunteers hosted an event for community members in remembrance and honor of loved ones who have passed.

About 300 people attended the third annual butterfly release celebration at Callie's Garden, James Short Park, Loyalsock Township.

"There's a palpable sense of togetherness and catharsis in the air when the butterflies are let go. It's a really moving experience, and we're so honored to provide this opportunity to those who are grieving to help celebrate the lives of their loved ones," said Kim Mains, medical social worker, UPMC in North Central Pa. "The event keeps growing and has become something we look forward to offering the community every year. We are grateful for everyone that participated and for the staff and 26 volunteers who helped make this happen."

In addition to the butterfly release ceremony, event attendees were treated to live music, a drum circle, art therapy, massage therapy, therapy dogs, children's activities and sweet treats.
