UPMC support staff honored with BEE awards

3 min read

Sherry Guthrie, patient care technician, 7 West, UPMC Williamsport, Jennifer Hook, respiratory therapist, UPMC Outpatient Emergency Department in Lock Haven, and Michelle Seiders, CNA, Muncy Place, part of UPMC Senior Communities in North Central Pa., were recently recognized with the BEE Award for their outstanding support of nursing teams.

The BEE Award, meaning Be Extraordinary Every Day, recognizes the care team that supports nursing staff and works closely with them to provide patients with the compassion and care they need.

Sherry was nominated by four patients, one who shared:

"While I experienced the assistance of many kind and caring nurses, techs, and physicians during my stay, when Sherry Guthrie walked into my room, she brought a sense of calm, confidence, and loving care to me.

"Sherry was honest, open, instructive, and made me feel like my best friend had stopped in to visit. She guided me through basic hygiene, helping me to wash and change into fresh clothing. I felt totally refreshed and able to face the day ahead because of her open attitude and helpful administration.

"During the day, whenever Sherry stopped by to check on me, she brought a bright shining personality with her to make sure my spirits didn't lag. When my husband came to visit, she treated him like a dignitary and escorted him to my door in a wheelchair because walking is so painful to him. That kindness will never be forgotten.

"Having an employee like Sherry who puts so much loving care into her job simply because she loves it is such a bonus for UPMC. She showed integrity, kindness, commitment, respect, and excellence to me, my husband, and to UPMC. UPMC is so lucky to have her."

Jennifer was nominated by a co-worker who shared:

"Jen is always very helpful in the Emergency Department. She helps room patients, obtain vitals, answer phones, and assist staff with anything that is within her scope of practice.

"Every day she is working, she makes sure to come over as soon as she can to ask what needs to be done and if anyone needs help. She even helps Environmental Services clean beds and rooms.

"Jen is also very empathic and calming to our patients. Jen goes above and beyond what is expected of her and truly exemplifies all UPMC's values and characteristics."

Michelle was nominated by two residents, one who shared:

"Michelle is wonderful. She is very good, very conscientious, and so very kind to us all. She makes sure our clothes get put away and our rooms are clean. She's on top of her job every day. She is such a hard worker, and I know she cares about us all. Everyone should be more like Michelle."
