Wellsboro woman still surviving 19 days ‘Alone’

MARTY WEAVER – Rose Anna Moore sits with a cup of coffee and chats with her customers.

It's Day 19 on Grizzly Mountain, and nine people remain in the running for the $500,000 prize that will go to the winner of the History Channel survival series, "Alone."

By the end of the day, a second person will tap out and leave the competition -- but not Rose Anna Moore of Wellsboro.

At this point, four episodes into the series, Moore becomes one of eight people still trying to outlast everyone else to claim the cash pot.

We first see Moore on Day 9, using her bushcraft skills to fashion a fishing pole, already having built a shelter, obtained water and made fire.

The pole doesn't work so well, and she's back to foraging for berries, something she'll continue while she tries to figure out how to obtain protein with limited supplies.

Later that day, a grizzly bear comes along. She is able to scare it off with a bear banger, a loud explosive that may be helpful in warding off bears.

"That was intense," Moore says, adding that it's not about being tough but being smart.

We do not see Moore again until Day 17, when she is crafting a fish basket. So far, she has not caught any fish in Chilko Lake in British, Columbia, Canada, where this season takes place, and she is hopeful her next ploy will work. She has lost a considerable amount of weight by now and must find food. She talks about being resilient and says nothing will keep her down.

Two days later, the fish basket remains empty. She says she will try to do something a little different every day. Then it's back to berry picking and preparing for changing conditions in the upcoming days. She sees that the red berries she has been eating are starting to turn black, a sign that they won't be around much longer.

"Alone" airs at 9:30 p.m. on the History Channel. Watch for future updates on how Moore does in the Sun-Gazette's Outdoors section.
