WRRGC squirrel hunt continues to grow as it hosted fifth installment recently

Wallis Run Rod and Gun Club had their first Squirrel Hunt five years ago and a couple dozen people joined the event. On Saturday, Feb. 24, over 300 people participated in this fundraising event. In total 105 teams hunted between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Cody and Sadie Reed were the winners of the event and had one of the best stories about their participation. Cody and Sadie had heard about the annual event for years and that it would be fun to attend. When Cody asked Sadie what she wanted to do on her birthday this year, her immediate response was to participate in the WRRGC squirrel hunt.

It turned in to a memorable birthday for sure.

The event had many other interesting storylines, including a wounded veteran Josh Rockwell that was able to harvest a squirrel with a bow. This year also saw a larger participation of youth hunters teaming up with their moms, dads and friends. The map of participants has also expanded; one team came from as far Philadelphia to participate while many other local counties were represented at the event.

Heath Heller stated “that Pa Wounded Warriors and Heroes and Horses would split over $22,000 in proceeds from the event.”

With any event like this it could not happen without the membership, families, sponsors and friends of WRRGC. One of the friends of WRRGC that stood out was Jim Smith. He worked tirelessly to provide a tremendous meal for the guests. Smith was able to cook over 400 chicken halves and all the fixings for the event in just two days.
