Community Outdoor calendar for week of August 27
NATURE JOURNALING
WHERE: Rider Park
WHEN: Tuesday, August. 27 at 4 p.m.
NOTES: Lose your inhibitions and be inspired by nature. Learn how to make quick field journal sketches with Donna Woodland, a frequent hiker at Rider Park. If anyone is interested, they should register by calling 570-321-1500 or emailing AmyP@FCFPartnership.org. An email will be sent prior to the event with additional information to registered guests. Those who are interested should meet at the picnic pavilion.
Please bring a lawn chair if desired for individual reflections. All materials will be provided. You are welcome to bring your favorite sketching materials and water colors.
NIGHT SKY TOUR WITH BINOCULARS
WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park
WHEN: Saturday, August 31 at 8:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Sunday, September 1 at 8:15 p.m. (Hyner Run)
NOTES: Join the park naturalist and go on a night sky tour with binoculars. Participants will be learning how to use a star map, finding visible constellations and sharing some folklore and mythology about them. Please bring binoculars to enhance the view of some of the different constellations and stars.
All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled din the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.
Should the weather be cloudy, an alternative program will be offered at the amphitheater. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the beginning of Lake Shore Trail by the top of the dam. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the view.
FISH OF LITTLE PINE
WHERE: Little Pine State Park
WHEN: Friday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m.
NOTES: Join the park naturalist and learn about the many different types of fish of Little Pine. Afterward, there may be some time to share fish stories. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the amphitheater.
TROUT OF HYNER RUN
WHERE: Hyner Run State Park
When: Friday, August 30 at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: Join the park naturalist and learn about the different types of trout of Hyner Run. This will involve a walk to the stream. Afterward there may be time to share fish stories. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the amphitheater by the pool.
FALL WILDFLOWERS
WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park
WHEN: Saturday, August 31 at 3:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Sunday, September 1 at 3:30 p.m. (Hyner Run)
NOTES: Take a stroll around Little Pine State Park and/or Hyner Run State Park with the naturalist to see the fall wildflowers. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.
The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the amphitheater. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool.
AUDUBON EVENT:
SKYLINE DRIVE
WHERE: Skyline Drive at the top of Montgomery Pike on Route 15 in South Williamsport.
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 7 at 8 a.m.
NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a bird walk along Skyline Drive. The paved road is quite walkable, gently ascending the northeast slope of Bald Eagle Mountain. We expect to see and hear resident birds of a typical mixed Pennsylvania forest, including fall warblers. Towards the mountain top, tree species change and the vistas of the West Branch Valley are a treat.
The program is free and open to the public.

HAWK WATCH
WHERE: Montgomery Pike Overlook
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m.
NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a hawk watch at the Montgomery Pike Overlook. It has easy parking, is handicap-accessible and has a spectacular view of the Susquehanna Valley. Broad wing hawks are abundant at this time in September and, given favorable weather and a little luck, you may see several.
Smaller numbers of several other species are usually viewed. Bring a comfortable lawn chair. The program is free and open to the public. For more details visit www.lycomingaudubon.org.

Williamsport WatER
AUTHORITY
WHERE: Williamsport Water Authorty at the Waterdale Environmetal Education Center entrance
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m.
NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a bird walk. You will look for fall birds around Mosquito Run Reservoir and Mosquito Creek and walk along other water authority trails as time permits. The trails are unpaved and mostly flat.
Those interested should dress for the weather, including wearing mud-tolerant footwater. Bird watchers of all experience levels are welcome. The program is free and open to the public.

CHAPTER MEETING
WHERE: Taber Museum in Williamsport (858 W. Fourth Street)
WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a program on the birds and wildlife in Costa Rica presented by Mike Fialkovich. In January, 2023, he traveled to Costa Rica with the Audubon Society of Western PA for a 10-day tour of the country, visiting various habitats including mountains, rain forest and the Pacific Coast. The program will cover birds and other wildlife observed during the trip.
The progrma is free and open to the public. Anyone interested can also attend virtually with Zoom using the link found at www.lycomingaudubon.org.

ROSE VALLEY LAKE
WHERE: South Boat Launch of Rose Valley Lake
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m.
NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society at Rose Valley Lake to look for a wide variety of waterfowl, herons and shorebirds. You will walk portions of the road to look for migrant songbirds.
