Community Outdoors calendar for week of Aug. 19

WHAT’S OUT AT NIGHT HIKE

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. (Little Pine) and Saturday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. (Hyner Run).

NOTES: Join the park naturalist to use the senses for a hike about what’s out at night. Please bring sturdy shoes or boots and a flashlight. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the beginning of Lake Shore Trail by the kiosk at the top of the dam.

STREAM STUDY

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 23 at 3:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Saturday, Aug. 24 at 3:30 pm. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Join the park naturalist for a stream study and explore an underwater community to find some different aquatic insects that call this creek home. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. Please wear shoes to get wet. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather, high water or new community guidelines.

Those interested should meet at the foot bridge by the pool for the Hyner Run program. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the foot bridge at the lower picnic area.

NATURE JOURNALING

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Tuesday, August. 27 at 4 p.m.

NOTES: Lose your inhibitions and be inspired by nature. Learn how to make quick field journal sketches with Donna Woodland, a frequent hiker at Rider Park. If anyone is interested, they should register by calling 570-321-1500 or emailing AmyP@FCFPartnership.org. An email will be sent prior to the event with additional information to registered guests. Those who are interested should meet at the picnic pavilion.

Please bring a lawn chair if desired for individual reflections. All materials will be provided. You are welcome to bring your favorite sketching materials and water colors.

NIGHT SKY TOUR WITH BINOCULARS

WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park

WHEN: Saturday, August 31 at 8:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Sunday, September 1 at 8:15 p.m. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Join the park naturalist and go on a night sky tour with binoculars. Participants will be learning how to use a star map, finding visible constellations and sharing some folklore and mythology about them. Please bring binoculars to enhance the view of some of the different constellations and stars.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled din the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Should the weather be cloudy, an alternative program will be offered at the amphitheater. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the beginning of Lake Shore Trail by the top of the dam. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the view.

FISH OF LITTLE PINE

WHERE: Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the park naturalist and learn about the many different types of fish of Little Pine. Afterward, there may be some time to share fish stories. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the amphitheater.

TROUT OF HYNER RUN

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park

When: Friday, August 30 at 3:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the park naturalist and learn about the different types of trout of Hyner Run. This will involve a walk to the stream. Afterward there may be time to share fish stories. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the amphitheater by the pool.

FALL WILDFLOWERS

WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park

WHEN: Saturday, August 31 at 3:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Sunday, September 1 at 3:30 p.m. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Take a stroll around Little Pine State Park and/or Hyner Run State Park with the naturalist to see the fall wildflowers. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.
