The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership announced the winner of its first very Susquehanna Greenway Art contest. The winner was Carrie Bosch of Williamsport.

Her design stood out in the judging process for its creativity, thoughtful description, adherence to Susquehanna Greenway Partnership’s color palette, and the beautiful way it captured the variety of landscapes, wildlife and activities that we have in our region.

Bosch told Susquehanna Greenway Partnership that her earliest family memories were exploring the outdoors of Central Pennsylvania with her family and on weekends, would take short hikes around the state parks near her such as Ricketts Glen, World’s End and Raymond B. Winter.

“My mom would pack us a lunch and we would go, many times not sure (where) we might end up, but it was always a fun time,” Bosch wrote. “As an adult my love for the outdoors has only grown. I love visiting the state parks and have expanded to exploring our nation’s National Parks throughout the country.”

Bosch takes her two dogs for hikes at least three times a week she noted and has incorporated her love of the arts with her love of nature.

“I am an art teacher and I tr yto merge the importance of preserving nature for the future and our art projects to help instill a love of both in the students I teach,” Bosch said.

Years ago, Bosch noted that she started drawing the National Parks in pen and ink and is now moving toward collage-type artwork where she merges many parks into one cohesive image showcasing what each has to offer.

“I set out making this artwork with the same process. This design process does distort scale, but it does allow many aspects to be highlighted,” Bosch said. “My typical process starts by making a list of elements that I want in my work.”

Bosch begins sketching out the layout and with her award-winning work, merged the hand-drawn sketch with her love of graphic design by importing it into Photoshop to hand color the image to match the provided color palette.

The Williamsport resident also noted that she drew it with the understanding that it would be used for a sticker or decal.

“I would like to personally thank you all for the work you do to aid in preserving nature as well as creating interest in the outdoors and inspiring another generation of nature loves,” Bosch said about SGP.
