Outdoor community calendar for week of Sept. 17

FALL BIRDING

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. (Little Pine) and 6 p.m. (Hyner Run).

NOTES: Join the naturalist for some fall birding at Hyner Run and/or Little Pine State Park. Topics will include the different birds that live at Hyner Run and also how to identify them. Please bring your own binoculars and other birding gear. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Anyone interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail (kiosk at dam).

AUDUBON EVENT:

Williamsport Water Authority

WHERE: Williamsport Water Authorty at the Waterdale Environmetal Education Center entrance

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a bird walk. You will look for fall birds around Mosquito Run Reservoir and Mosquito Creek and walk along other water authority trails as time permits. The trails are unpaved and mostly flat.

Those interested should dress for the weather, including wearing mud-tolerant footwater. Bird watchers of all experience levels are welcome. The program is free and open to the public.

AUDUBON EVENT:

CHAPTER MEETING

WHERE: Taber Museum in Williamsport (858 W. Fourth Street)

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a program on the birds and wildlife in Costa Rica presented by Mike Fialkovich. In January, 2023, he traveled to Costa Rica with the Audubon Society of Western PA for a 10-day tour of the country, visiting various habitats including mountains, rain forest and the Pacific Coast. The program will cover birds and other wildlife observed during the trip.

The progrma is free and open to the public. Anyone interested can also attend virtually with Zoom using the link found at www.lycomingaudubon.org.

AUDUBON EVENT:

ROSE VALLEY LAKE

WHERE: South Boat Launch of Rose Valley Lake

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society at Rose Valley Lake to look for a wide variety of waterfowl, herons and shorebirds. You will walk portions of the road to look for migrant songbirds. This is an easy walk-and-ride event. The program is free and open to the public. For more details, visit www.lycomingaudubon.org.

TROUT OF HYNER RUN

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park

WHEN: Friday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the park naturalist and leanr about the different types of trout of Hyner Run. This will involve a walk to the stream. Afterward there may be time to share some fish stories. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the amphitheater by the pool.

INSECT SAFARI

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park

WHEN: Friday, September 6 at 2:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the park naturalist to go on an insect safari and learn some of the characteristics of an insect and go on a walk to look for different insects and their cousins. There will be a craft.

The program is intended for children, but anyone is free to attend. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The proram may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Anyone interested should meet at the amphitheater by the pool.

THE RESERVOIR, THE DAM AND LITTLE PINE

WHERE: Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Saturday, September 7 at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Join the park naturalist to learn about the reservoir, the dam and Little Pine, and the significance of it to the Little Pine Creek Valley and to the Susquehanna River. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail at the kiosk at the dam.

SOLAR VIEWING

WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner View State Park

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. (Little Pine) or Saturday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Join the naturalist at Hyner View State Park to do some solar viewing and learn things about the most well-known star in iour solar s ystem: the sun. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program will be modified if the weather is cloudy and may be canceled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the CCC statue and the Little Run program should meet at the Lake Shore Trail at the top of dam..

KATYDID CADENCE

WHERE: Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, September 13 at 7:45 p.m.

NOTES: Ever hear a katydid sing? Or maybe a katydidn’t? Join the park naturalist in this progrma called “Katydid Cadence” and learn about these fascinating insects and also why they sing at night.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe wweather or new community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the amphitheater.
