Outdoor community calendar for week of Sept. 24

FALL BIRDING

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. (Little Pine) and 6 p.m. (Hyner Run).

NOTES: Join the naturalist for some fall birding at Hyner Run and/or Little Pine State Park. Topics will include the different birds that live at Hyner Run and also how to identify them. Please bring your own binoculars and other birding gear. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Anyone interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail (kiosk at dam).

Williamsport WatER

AUTHORITY

WHERE: Williamsport Water Authorty at the Waterdale Environmetal Education Center entrance

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a bird walk. You will look for fall birds around Mosquito Run Reservoir and Mosquito Creek and walk along other water authority trails as time permits. The trails are unpaved and mostly flat.

Those interested should dress for the weather, including wearing mud-tolerant footwater. Bird watchers of all experience levels are welcome. The program is free and open to the public.

AUDUBON EVENT:

CHAPTER MEETING

WHERE: Taber Museum in Williamsport (858 W. Fourth Street)

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a program on the birds and wildlife in Costa Rica presented by Mike Fialkovich. In January, 2023, he traveled to Costa Rica with the Audubon Society of Western PA for a 10-day tour of the country, visiting various habitats including mountains, rain forest and the Pacific Coast. The program will cover birds and other wildlife observed during the trip.

The progrma is free and open to the public. Anyone interested can also attend virtually with Zoom using the link found at www.lycomingaudubon.org.

AUDUBON EVENT:

ROSE VALLEY LAKE

WHERE: South Boat Launch of Rose Valley Lake

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society at Rose Valley Lake to look for a wide variety of waterfowl, herons and shorebirds. You will walk portions of the road to look for migrant songbirds. This is an easy walk-and-ride event. The program is free and open to the public. For more details, visit www.lycomingaudubon.org.

TREE PLANTING

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 4 from 5-7 p.m.

NOTES: Help enhance American Woodcock habitat. The event will have people planting trees and shrubs. Meet at the picnic pavilion.

STAR PARTY

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Friday, Oc.t 4 from 7:15-9:30 p.m.

NOTES: The Central Pennsylvania Observers and Lycoming College students of physics will be on hand for the program. Those who are interested should arrive between 7:15 and 7:45 p.m. The program will begin around 8 p.m.

You will be greeted at the main parking area and directe dto walk up to the picnic pavilion. Please bring chairs, blankets, warm clothes and you are welcome to bring your own telescope.

NOTES: Join the James V Brown Library, LCLS and Rider Park manager Sara Street as we explore nature at Rider Park. Street will lead a tree indentification walk and there will be other family activities available. More information is available on the library’s calendar.

LIGHTENING YOUR LOAD

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9-11 a.m.

NOTES: Lunar’s Outdoor Adventures will present ways to pack your backpack efficiently, methods for “treading lightly on the land,” wilderness ethics and a short hike. To register, please visit lunarsoutdooradventures.com. Please note that Lunar’s Outdoor Adventures will do all the registrations.

WALK IN PENN’S WOODS

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 6 from 9-11 a.m.

NOTES: Hike with Rider Park manager Sara Street and members of the Lycoming Audubon Society. We will tour a portion of the meadow area where an American Woodcock Habitat Enhancement project is being implemented. Then we will head to Rider Park trails to enjoy the woods and find some vistas.

Bring your binoculars, hopefully we will see some birds along the way. Expect an approximately 2.5-mile loop hike with moderate evelation changes.

NATURE JOURNALING

WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 6 from 12-2 p.m.

NOTES: Join Donna Woodland, a frequent Rider Park hiker and adventurer, as she guides those through various techniques and media that let you lose your inhibitions and approach field sketching wtih pleasure.

NOTES: Join Lycoming Audubon Society for a leisurely walk on open roads and trails looking for fall migrants, late resident birds, and possible early winter arrivals. Tick precautions are recommended.

NATIONAL HIKING DAY

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 17 from 9-11 a.m.

NOTES: Join Rider Park manager Sara Street for a hike to the new vista for National Hiking Day. It’s a special day dedicated to celebrating the great outdoors and promoting the activity of hiking. It provides an opportunity for individuals to connect with nature, explore scenic trails and reap the numerous physical and mental health benefits that hiking has to offer. This annual observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of outdoor activities and encourage people of all ages to embrace the joys of hiking.

We will meet in the main parking area. Plan to hike roughly 2.5-3 miles as we tour the meadow areas, Cheryl’s trail, a new vista and finish by hiking back on the Green trail.

EARLY SUCCESSIONAL

HABITAT FOR BIRDS

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon.

NOTES: Josh Rittenhouse, Mid-Atlantic Audubon Society Forest Program association, will lead those on a hike to explore early successional habitat for birds. We will tour a new American Woodcock habitat for birds. We will tour a new American Woodcock habitat enhancement project, and several sites where timber was cut in 2017.

Audubon Event: Lime Bluff Recreation Area

WHERE: Lime Bluff Recreation Area (Hughesville)

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m.

NOTES: Join Lycoming Audubon Society for a leisurely walk along the gravel and mowed paths of the Lime Bluff Recreation Area to look for raptors and songbirds.

This walk will take place in the late afternoon for those who can’t make the morning bird walks. Program is free and open to the public.

Tools and resources available to engage homeowners from Backyard Habitat Programs to Community Science Programs will be shared as well as impactful municipal and community projects.

WHERE: Robert Porter Allen Natural Area

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 a.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for a bird walk on an easy trail and learn about the Robert Porter Allen Natural Area. This site — known by many as Sylvan Dell — is just east of Little League Stadium. As resources, time and effort come together, it will become a beautiful natural area for the public. Program is free and open to the public.
