Community Outdoor calendar for Week of August 5

DISCOVER SNAKES

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 7 from 9-10:30 a.m.

NOTES: Learn about Pennsylvania snakes from Dr. Mary Kate O’DOnnell. Those who attend will go on a short hike to discover a snake in nature.

TREE ID

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 8 at 3:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Saturday, Aug. 9 at 3:30 p.m. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Join the park naturalist to learn about the different trees in Hyner Run State Park. There will be a craft at the end. This program will be suited toward families with children, but anyone is welcome to attend.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the pool. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at Pavilion No. 4 in the lower picnic area of Little Pine State Park.

CCC OF HYNER RUN AND LITTLE PINE

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 8 at 8 p.m. (Little Pine) and Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. (Hyner Run)

WHERE: Join the park naturalist and learn about the CCC of Hyner Run and/or the CCC of Little Pine and the work they did in the 1930s and 1940s in the area, the culture in these camps and how it prepared some to be well-disciplined World War II veterans.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Please bring a lawn chair. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the amphitheater.

SULLIVAN COUNTY

SUMMIT LOOP

WHERE: Summit Loop in Laporte

WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 14 from 6-8 p.m.

NOTES: This is the second field trip in collaboration with the Loyalsock Foundation in Sullivan County. This evening walk will again explore the Summit Trail. There are more than 70 acres adjacent to the Sullivan County School District that are being developed as a recreation area. Forested areas, rock ledges and a bog will offer a variety of habitats to look and listen for birds.

For directions on a GPS enter “Summit Loop, Laporte, PA.” Take US Route 220 to Laporte and enter the borough US PA Route 42. Travel through town on Main Street, the entrance to the area is off Route 42 approximately 0.6 miles after the Sullivan County Courthouse. Watch for the sign on the left side of the road.

Those interested should meet at the parking area at the end of the driveway

EVENING BIRDING

WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 15 at 3:30 p.m. (Hyner Run) and 7:30 p.m. (Little Pine)

NOTES: Join the naturalist for some evening birding on the Lake Shore Trail. Topics will include the different birds that live at Little Pine and how to identify them.

Please brings your own binoculars and other birding gear. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail (kiosk at the dam). Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool..

STAR PARTY

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 15 at 9 p.m.

NOTES: Gaze at the night sky through various telescopes. This is a relaxed chance to visit Rider Park in the evening hours. Local amateur astronomers will share their knowledge about the seasonal changes in star positions. Please arrive between 8:30-8:45 p.m. to get settled on the lawn.

Those who attend should bring blankets, chairs, snacks, warm clothing and red flashlights.

EPHEMERAL ART

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9-11 a.m.

NOTES: Join the James V. Brown Library and Rider Park as we explore the subject of ephemeral art. Wander the meadow and surrounding woods to collect elements to create your own temporary “piece” of art.

FALL WREATHS

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 7 from 1-3 p.m.

NOTES: Assemble an autumn-inspired wreath using corn husks, dyed hydrangea blooms and plants with seasonal color. Our neighbor Pete Gstalder will guide us through the crafting process.

The cost to cover the materials for those who attend is $25. Please bring cash to cover the cost.
