Outdoors community calendar for Week of Aug. 19

TROUT OF LITTLE PINE AND HYNER

WHERE: Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 22 at 3:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and 8 p.m. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Join the park naturalist and learn about the many different types of fish of Little pine. Afterward, there may be some time to share fish stories.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the contact station. Those interested in the Hyner Run porgram should meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Please bring a lawn chair.

WHITETAIL DEER

WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Join the park naturalist for a look at the natural history of one of the most sought-after game species in Pennsylvania: the whitetail deer.

Other topics will include the challenge of chronic wasting disease and other challeneges facing the deer today. This program is designed to be an informal one.

All children who are interested must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Those interested in attending the Little Pine program should meet at the contact station. Those intersted in attending the Hyner Run program should meet at the pool.

KAYAK FISHING

WHERE: Bald Eagle State Park

WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon

NOTES: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fish from a kayak? Now is your opportunity to learn about kayak fishing. Join the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and fishing skills instructors for this 3-hour, in-person program designed to introduce you to the basics of kayak fishing.

Those interested must register online at https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/231385. Once the maximum for registration is reached, the event will be closed for new registrants.

Topics and/or skills covered will include:

• Safety on the water

• What you need to know before you go kayak fishing

• Kayaks and paddles

• Fishing basics

• Lake habitat and where to find fish

• Basic fishing and boating regulations

• Fishing from a kayak

Participants who register and attend the program will receive a post program email that includes a kayak fishing, digital packet to help you continue your journey.

LUMBERING OF

HYNER RUN

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 29 at 3:30 p.m. (Hyner Run) and 8 p.m. (Little Pine)

NOTES: Step back into time and experience the culture of the lumbermen in the late 1800s in the program Lumbering of Hyner Run and Little Pine State Parks. Topics will include the local history and prehistory of the area, the different developments made in the era and the results at the end of the era.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines.

Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Please bring lawn chairs. Those interested in the Little Pine porgram should meet at the amphitheater.

CRITTERS OF THE CREEK

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Saturday Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. (Little Pine) and Sunday, Aug. 31 at 3:30 p.m. (Hyner Run).

NOTES: Join the park naturalist for the program “Critters of the Creek” and learn about some different aquatic insects that call Hyner Run home. There will also be a craft.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.

Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet beside the pool. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the footbridge at the lower picnic area.

NIGHT SKY TOUR WITH

BINOCULARS

WHERE: Hyner Run State Park and Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 30 at 8:15 p.m. (Little Pine) and Sunday, Aug. 31 at 8:15 p.m. (Hyner Run)

NOTES: Join the park naturalist and go on a “Night Sky Tour with Binoculars.” Participants will be learning how to use a star map, finding visible constellations and sharing some folklore and mythology about them.

Please bring binoculars to enhance the view of some of the different constellations and stars.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.

The program may be modified or canceled in the event of rain or new community guidelines.

Should the weather be cloudy, an alternative program will be offered. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet at the View. Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the main day use parking area.

EPHEMERAL ART

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9-11 a.m.

NOTES: Join the James V. Brown Library and Rider Park as we explore the subject of ephemeral art. Wander the meadow and surrounding woods to collect elements to create your own temporary “piece” of art.

FALL WREATHS

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 7 from 1-3 p.m.

NOTES: Assemble an autumn-inspired wreath using corn husks, dyed hydrangea blooms and plants with seasonal color. Our neighbor Pete Gstalder will guide us through the crafting process.

The cost to cover the materials for those who attend is $25. Please bring cash to cover the cost.

STAR PARTY

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 12 at 8:30 p.m.

NOTES: Gaze at the night sky through various telescopes. This is a relaxed chance to visit Rider Park in the evening hours. Local amateur astronomers will share their knowledge about the seasonal changes in star positions. Please arrive between 8-8:15 p.m. to get settled on the lawn.

Those who attend should bring blankets, chairs, snacks, warm clothing and red flashlights.

STAR PARTY

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 14 from 12-5 p.m.

NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY

WHERE: Little Buffalo State Park

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

NOTES: Celebrate national hunting and fishing weekend with a brand-new field experience at Little Buffalo State Park. Learn some new hunting and fishing skills with expert instructors. All ages are welcome.

Registration is not required for this event.

Demos and talks currently include bass fishing, fly cashing, PA trappers, bird dog hunting, archery and falconry. More may be added soon.
