AUDUBON EVENT: ROBERT PORTER ALLEN NATURAL AREA WORK DAY

WHERE: 1722 Sylvan Dell Road in South Williamsport

WHEN: Sunday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NOTES: Join fellow members of the community and students from local colleges and high schools to work on habitat restoration, invasive plant removal and other general efforts to keep RPANA beautiful. Interested parties should contact SaraS@fcfpartnership.org to RSVP.

AUDUBON EVENT: MONTHLY CHAPTER MEETING

WHERE: Taber Museum (858 W. Fourth Street, Williamsport)

WHEN: Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m.

NOTES: Join the Lycoming Audubon Society for our April chapter meeting at the Taber Museum. Meetings are free and open to the public. This month will feature a quick tour through the avian landscape of our central Pennsylvania woods and the backyards of Stan LeQuire. What song did you hear this spring?

This presentation will have practical information for both beginning and experienced birdwatchers. Each participant will receive a checklist/cheat sheet for the songs and calls of local birds.

BACKPACKING 101 WORKSHOP

WHERE: Rider Park

WHEN: Sunday, April 12 from 1-3 p.m.

NOTES: Have you always wanted to try backpacking to spend an overnight in the woods with everything you need on your back, but just not quite sure where to start? Come enjoy an informal afternoon as together, we learn more about the beauty of backpacking in Pennsylvania forests.

We will learn all about necessary equipment, meals, planning a trip, what to do about water, bathrooms and how to get a good night’s sleep. Come test out some equipment, asks questions and enjoy a hot beverage while we plan for big adventures.

BIRDING AT THE EAGLE WATCH

WHERE: Little Pine State Park

WHEN: Friday, April 17 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

NOTES: On Friday between 9:30-11:30 a.m., stop by to go to “Birding at the Eagle Watch” and see how to identify birds at Little Pine State Park. There will be a limited number of binoculars on hand, along with a spotting scope.

Participants should bring other bird-watching gear if desired.

All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines. Those interested should meet at the Eagle Watch.

JOY TO THE

EARTH FAMILY FUN

WHERE: Selinsgrove Commons (2 N. Market Street, Selinsgrove)

WHEN: Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

NOTES: Children and adults alike can share the excitement at the fifth annual “Joy to the Earth” celebration in honor of Earth moth. The Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Education hosts this free event on April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Selinsgrove Commons.

Enjoy live music, hands-on activities and critters from worms to fish, educational exhibits and more.

AUDUBON EVENT: RIDER PARK

WHERE: Rider Park at 1769 Caleb Creek Road in Trout Run

WHEN: Saturday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

NOTES: Our group will gather at the parking area of this wonderful 850-plus acre park, a gift of the late Thomas J. Rider. We will look and listen for a variety of species of birds in the woods and meadows of the Allegheny Ridge. The walk follows moderate grades, on mostly grassy trails.

We will meet at the yellow gate near the main parking area. After the walk, there is a Native Plant Sale with LEAF (10 a.m.-1 p.m.)

AUDUBON EVENT: EARTH DAY WALK WITH SUSQUEHANNA GREENWAY AT RPANA

WHERE: 721 E. Mountain Ave. in South Williamsport

WHEN: Wednesday, April 22 at 8 a.m.

NOTES: We will begin our Earth Day Celebrations with a Susquehanna Greenway partnered walk in this local preserved wetlands between Bald Eagle Mountain and the Susquehanna River. We will walk this gently rolling landscape and search for a variety of bird species as we also learn about the vision and ongoing work efforts for this special area.

The rain date is scheduled for Thursday, April 23 at 8 a.m.

AUDUBON EVENT: EARTH DAY OVER THE BRIDGE

WHERE: North side of the Susquehanna River Walk in Williamsport (by Wegmans)

WHEN: Wednesday, April 22 at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Fifty-six years ago, Earth Day was initiated as a national expression of appreciation for our planet. Join the Lycoming Audubon Society on the River Walk gathering on the north side near Wegmans by the river dam. Ample parking is available.

Look for Audubon signs. With signs and flags, we’ll walk clockwise, cross the Market Street Bridge, and back. Thanks for adding your presence in this simple statement of celebrating our beautiful Earth.

SPRING DISCOVERY BACKPACK

WHERE: Worlds End State Park/Loyalsock State Forest

WHEN: Friday, April 24-Sunday, April 26

NOTES: This is our first backpack trip of the year, a fantastic time to see what new life is emerging from winter’s grasp. Perhaps some early wildflowers? A warmbreeze blowing down the east branch of Double Run? Small sprigs of green emerging in unexpected places?

We shall go slowly, taking time to notice and discover spring’s small, early gifts along the way.

The total mileage for the trip is approximately 5-6 miles. We will be meeting at the Worlds End State Park visitor’s center and will explore Double Run and surrounding state forests where wildflowers and other signs of new life are in abundance.

The cost is $325 per person wtih all equipment and food provided.
