Outdoors community calendar for week of July 14
HAPPENINGS AT HYNER
WHERE: Hyner Run State Park
WHEN: Saturday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
NOTES: At Hyner Run State Park on July 18, join the park naturalist and guest speakers for a good late morning and afternoon of local history. There will be five programs dealing with the local history of the area:
• “CCC of Clinton County” is a program presented by Rich Wykoff, education and outreach administrator for Lumber Heritage Region, and will be a scavenger hunt-like approach to learning about the CCC Camp in Hyner Run State Park and others.
• “General history” of the Area is a program presented by Lou Bernard, overseer of adult services at Ross Library and local historian, and will be some of the interesting stories and folklore around the Hyner area.
• “Paper making” is a program presented by Lin Greenaway, forester of the Sproul State Forest, and will get into some quick history of paper making in the area while also demonstrating how to make paper now.
• “Logging” is a program presented by Jennifer Haines, museum education at Pennsylvania Logging Museum, and will be about the logging industry in the area and some of the tools used.
• “Branding Tree Cookies” is a program presented by Hyner Run campground hosts and will consist of branding a tree cookie for a memento to take home.
• “Artifacts” is a program presented by Rich Gulyas, environmental education specialist at Mount Pisgah State Park.
Feel free to come to all programs, or go to some and take a dip in the pool. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate in the program.
The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines.
All the programs will be held in the lawn near the amphitheater by the pool. Some may be moved to Pavilion No. 1 in the case of rain.
CREEK CRITTERS
WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park
WHEN: Saturday, July 25 at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: Join the park naturalist and explore an underwater community to find some different creek critters that call this creek home. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.
Please wear shoes to get wet. Program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe eather, high water or new community guidelines.
Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the footbridge at the Lower Picnic Area. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should meet beside the pool.
WORLD OF BATS
WHERE: Little Pine State Park and Hyner Run State Park
WHEN: Saturday, July 25 at 8:30 p.m.
NOTES: This program will be focusing on the bats’ adaptions, some myths about bats and a fungus that is threatening their population. There will also be a bat count, weather permitting.
All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The program may be modified or canceled in the event of severe weather or new community guidelines.
Those interested in the Little Pine program should meet at the amphitheater. Those interested in the Hyner Run program should emet at the amphitheater by the pool.
