Stopped for speeding on Interstate I-180 in Loyalsock Township on Sept. 19, motorist Edward Hartz, 45, of 216 Lewis Road, was found to possess four bags of marijuana in his 1999 Chevrolet Malibu, a state trooper said in an affidavit. "There was an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, the trooper said. A blood test confirmed there was marijuana in Hartz's system at the time. Charged with DUI of marijuana, possession of marijuana and speeding, he is free on $5,000 bail.
Maalek Smith, 33, of 1135 Meade St., has been charged with DUI and careless driving in the 2100 block of Poco Farm Road in Loyalsock Township about 11:45 p.m. on Sept. 17 after a state trooper stopped his 2000 Pontiac Montana, which crossed the fog line several times, according to court records. "There was a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" coming from the driver, whose eyes were watery and bloodshot, the trooper said. Smith, who had a blood-alcohol content level of .13, is free on $5,000 bail.
Moments after arriving at a crash scene in the 12000 block of Route 973 in Mifflin Township about 2:40 p.m. on Sept. 7, a state trooper smelled alcohol on the breath of motorist Samuel Lush, 59, of 92 Old State Road, Cammal, according to court records. Charged with DUI and careless driving, Lush had a blood-alcohol content level of .19, police said. He is free on $2,500 bail.
While investigating a crash in the 400 block of Rose Valley Road in Gamble Township about 11;15 p.m. on Sept. 5, a state trooper detected "a strong odor of an alcohol beverage coming from motorist Randall Trump, 36, of Latrobe, according to court records. Trump admitted to "consuming a few beers," the trooper said. Charged with DUI and careless driving, Trump, who had a blood-alcohol content level of .23, is free on $5,000 bail.
After a South Williamsport patrolman stopped Hope Sampsell's 2004 Jeep station wagon because of a burned out headlight at Maynard Street and Bald Eagle Alley about 8 p.m. on Aug. 25, the officer "smelled a strong odor of alcohol" coming from the 56-year-old South Williamsport driver, according to an affidavit. Sampsell, of 2022 Whitford Ave., had a blood-alcohol content level of .17. Charged with DUI, Sampsell is free on $5,000 bail.
Joseph Gansel, 58, of 1514 Elwood Road, had a blood-alcohol content level of .15 on Aug. 5 when a state trooper stopped his 1995 Toyota Corolla on Westminster Drive in Loyalsock Township because the license plate was expired, according to court records. Charged with DUI and careless driving, Gansel admitted he drank two beers, the trooper said. A bench warrant for his arrest was expected to be filed because he failed to appear for his preliminary hearing.
A blood test revealed that Richard Clark, 49, of Powhatan, Virginia, had amphetamines and methamphetamines in his system on Aug. 4 when a state trooper stopped his 2010 Chrysler in the area of Canfield Lane in Loyalsock Township, according to court records. Clark – charged with DUI of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and careless driving- is free on $5,000 bail.
