Williamsport fire officials’ investigation into West Fourth Street blaze ongoing

While the five people displaced by Sunday night's four-unit apartment house fire at 1226 W. Fourth St. start to rebuild their lives, city fire investigators continue to try to determine the cause of the two-alarm blaze that began in a rear second-floor bedroom in an apartment rented by Navarro Adams and Donna Lyons, according to Fire Chief Sam Aungst.
Adams was treated at UPMC Williamsport for smoke inhalation as was Latoya Simmons, who city firefighters rescued from her second-floor apartment. Also displaced were Karvel Swayby and her boyfriend, Eustace Chisholm, Aungst said. Although there was smoke and water damage throughout the building, the fire itself was confined to the room of origin, he added.
August said it was critical having two additional firefighters on duty when the fire broke out. The original number reported in Monday's edition was incorrect. The building, which was equipped with working smoke alarms, is owned by Jason Mazzullo, Aungst said. A fire damage estimate has yet to be determined.
