Felony theft charges lodged against two men in separate cases
In late September 2022, Sharon Murray contracted with William Dalton Welch to have his company B&C Catering cater her daughter’s wedding for 110 guests on Oct. 14, 2023, according to city police. Murray gave Welch a $429 down payment and then, two weeks before the big day, she gave him the remaining $3,422 that was due, police said. However, on the morning of the wedding, “Welch called Murray and told her that he could not cater the wedding. None of the agreed upon services were fulfilled, and Welch refused to refund the money to Murray,” police alleged in affidavit. Facing felony charges of deceptive business practices and theft by deception, Welch, 47, of 2252 W. Third St., has waived his preliminary hearing before District Judge Christian Frey and is free on $5,000 bail.
In another case, while his mother was recovering at a local nursing home, Timothy Edward Sloop, 41, of 1610 High St., forged and cashed nine checks from her account, totaling $6,900, without her permission between July 8 and Aug. 13, city police alleged in an affidavit. He has since waived his preliminary hearing before Frey and remains free on $25,000 bail.
